Painted Ikea Rug

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend. Mike and I went away for a long weekend, mini-babymoon for some R&R, yummy food, and shopping:) It was so much fun. I’ll share more about it with pics later in the week, but I wanted to share a quick and simple tutorial today for the nursery. Our main shopping this weekend was done at Ikea. The closest one is about 2 hours from our house so we don’t get over there too often, which means everytime we do get over there, we want to buy everything in sight:) One item I had on the list was a rug for the nursery. The room is carpeted, but I wanted to bring some prettiness to the floor and prolong the life of the carpet by using a rug. I had planned on buying the same rug we put in our kitchen that I painted stripes on. I had a sweet graphic writing in mind, but they didn’t have it at our store, so I purchased this Gislev rug instead. If you’ve read many blogs or looked at inexpensive home decor, I can almost guarantee you’ve seen this rug in numerous rooms. It’s a great-looking rug and only costs $20. Hard to beat. So I snatched one up with the intention of adding a my personal touch on it to fit in the nursery.
Here is what it looked like when I brought it home:
Then I grabbed some supplies to make it fit with my nursery mood board.
- foam craft brush
- paper plate
- Qtips {not pictured}
- paint {I used Whispering Peach by Behr-the accent color for the room}
- fabric medium
I started by mixing my paint and fabric medium together on the plate. This helps the paint to be a little less crunchy when it’s finished. Then I grabbed my fabric brush and started painting the straight lines first.
I went back and painted the circles with a Qtip because it was easier than using the brush. It took about an hour to paint the whole thing. Pretty easy to customize this rug to fit any color scheme you have. Here it is finished.
I took it up to the nursery when I was done and it is absolutely perfect. You may notice a door by the crib…that’s for a fun upcoming project:) The peach color of the rug is used on that door also and I love how they look with the creams, whites, and grays in the room.
And with the pop of pink in the curtains. You’ll see how it all ties in when I show you the finished room:)
I love how it’s all coming together! What do you think of the painted rug?

Oh Jessie! Looks great! What size is that rug? In luv w the peach accent…
Thanks, Kelly! It’ 6’5″ x 4’4″. It’s huge and so cheap!
What a smart idea!
Such an easy way to customize the rug to your colors, too.
love the grey/pink/peach combo you’ve got going on! So modern, but cozy
Thanks, Ash:) It’s coming together!
I love it! What is the fabric medium you use? I’m thinking of painting our red curtains to a tone on tone white/cream and I don’t want them to be crunchy either! Would love your advice! Thanks,

Hi Kaara!
I used the Martha Stewart brand-I think I found it at Michaels. Good luck with your curtains!
