The Big Couch Debate: Leather vs. Upholstered
| January 2, 2013 | Posted by Jessie under Inspiration, Living Room |
Hi everyone! I hope you had a fun and safe New Year’s Eve! We had a few friends over, played cards, and ate lots of yummy food at our house. My kind of NYE:) We had a great time. We spent the first day of the new year doing a little shopping, purging our storage closet {to make room for baby stuff!} and clearing out our living room.
The living room is our next makeover project {along with the nursery, of course} and we started by getting new furniture. We spent the last month or two scouring different furniture stores for some new living room furniture and it’s going to be delivered this afternoon. Yay! Our slipcovered furniture is upstairs in our loft now, which will turn into kiddie land. We thought it would be perfect up there because none of it was expensive and can be easily cleaned. We debated for awhile on what to get for downstairs before pulling the trigger: sectional vs. couches and leather vs. upholstered. We love our sectional, but were kind of ready to switch it up. We also liked the idea of being able to spread out a little when people come over. Sometimes on a sectional you feel like everyone has to be corralled to one seating area and we didn’t want anyone to feel suffocated:) Next came the leather or upholstery dilemma. Let’s take a look at some pics of each.
Upholstery:
- Pros: soft and comfortable, warm, choices of colors
- Cons: not easy to wipe things off, more apt to stain
Leather:
- Pros: warm color tones, wear well, easy to wipe/clean, cozy look/feel
- Cons: can be cold, static, not as many color options
When talking to a furniture retailer, we asked about the wear and tear and life span of each type with a dog and baby around the house. She felt like they were pretty similar as far as that goes. Both can tear {dog nails} and may have similar issues so she directed us to focus more on cleaning the furniture and the overall look that we want.
Any guesses what we decided on??? What is your preference? Has anyone had more luck with one or the other?
Well, we ended up with the leather! We liked how easy it is to clean and were ready for a new look in this room. We also got a 5-year care plan that covers tears, rips, stains, etc. so part or all of the couches {we got two different couches} can be repaired or replaced for free if anything happens to them. We have big plans for our fireplace/mantle and the whole feel of the room is going to be cozy! I’ll show you the updates and furniture next week!

We got a leather couch over 10 years ago and I love it. I’ll never go back to fabric for something we use so often. I was very hesitant to get leather and it was my husband who really wanted it. Shortly after we got it, my son spilled red juice on it while company was coming up the driveway. I got it cleaned up before they came and no one was the wiser. So I’m definitely sold on the leather. Can’t wait to see how the room looks.
