Back to School: Welcome Sign

Well this is it.  My last few days of freedom before it’s back to the ole grind.  As much as I’ll miss my carefree summer schedule, I’m actually excited to get the school year started.  I’m teaching an ENRICH classroom, which is a group of 23 high-achieving first graders.  I have all sorts of fun ideas for the year so I’m anxious to get going and see how all my plans pan out:)  Last week I decided to do a little crafting for my room {and I’ll have a full tour of my classroom for you later this week!} and came up with this sweet little welcome sign for my front door using all materials I had on hand.

I started by cutting a piece of leftover underlayment board from our oversized living room artwork project and spray painted it a glossy gray {leftover from Christmas}.  Then I taped off stripes every 2″ using my favorite Frog Tape.

I used a sample pot of Swan Sea by Behr that was leftover from the laundry room art work {here and here} to paint the stripes.

I peeled the tape off while the paint was still wet and had perfectly painted stripes.

Nice, calming colors.  Surely, this will make them all walk in the door nice and peaceful right? :)

I had a box of buttons that I laid out into the shape of a cute little apple.

Before I glued them into place, I stenciled my words on the board to be sure the size was right.

Once the words were painted, I went ahead and glued the outline of the apple to the center of the board.

I grabbed a few more buttons and filled in the middle to finish it off.

This project could be translated a million ways.  Maybe a little monkey or crown of buttons for that sweet little one in your life.  A fun sign for your craft/sewing room.  Or how about making one for the teacher in your life?

I’m heading into school today for some finishing touches and to hang my sign.  I’ll be back later with pics of it in place!

  2. This is cute! I’m enjoying my last few days of freedom as well before I get back to teaching 10th and 12th graders English! I do not want to get back to the grind… :(

  3. I am in love with that sign. The apple is so adorable and perfect for a classroom! I can’t wait to see what your classroom looks like. I’m teaching second grade this year, and have taught kinder for the past 3 years. We still have about three weeks left until it’s back to the grind for us!
