Mission Organization: Junk Drawer {#1}

I’m back with another installment of Mission: Organization.  For those of you who may have missed previous posts {you can catch up here, here, and here}, I’m trying to organize my home 1 junk drawer at a time.  For a refresher, here’s my list:

  • junk drawer #1
  • junk drawer #2
  • junk drawer #3 {anyone else have multiple junk drawers or is that just us?}
  • underneath my bathroom sink
  • underneath Mike’s bathroom sink
  • bathroom drawers
  • upstairs “storage” closet {aka junk room}
  • the sewing room
  • laundry room
  • pantry
  • closet under the stair case

As you can see, I’ve been able to mark off a few but still have a ways to go over the next 6 weeks.  Last week I tackled what was probably our most junky junk drawer.  Shall we take a peak of the mess it was?

We were lucky to get it closed again once it was opened.  And if you could get it open, you were really lucky to actually find what you were looking for.  So I started by clearing it out and separating everything into categorized piles {organized chaos}.

Then I literally vacuumed it out.  Is that weird?  There were so many little random pieces of junk collected it in there it was easier {side note-I vacuum my stove top too.  Weirder?  I like to suck all those little crumbs up before I clean:)}.

Then I reorganized.  I would love to have some shallow little tray{s} to put in there to corral everything but I was too lazy to run out and get anything.  So to keep it simple, I bagged up all the craft supplies, then laid everything else that belongs back in this drawer into sections.  Everything else either went into the trash or where it actual belongs.  And, drumroll please…

Yay!  Nice, organized, and clean.  Better yet, you can actually open, close, and find things!  Success.  Let’s see how long I can keep it this way:)

  1. Thanks for sharing, Jessie! I have one of these drawers in the kitchen. It’s practically a quarterly ritual to clean it out. No matter how hard I try to keep it that way, it always ends up with new “stuff” tossed into it. I think there’s a “stuff” fairy that flits around at night depositing things in people’s kitchen drawers. And she visits my house on a regular basis!

  2. Thanks for the motivation to tackle my junk drawer(s) and for letting me know that I am not alone in vacuuming my stove top! I vacuum my oven too :-)
