DIY Wine Rack

My mom got a “new” double oven…about 6 years ago. They had to remove the upper cabinet doors and the door under the oven also when they installed it and she’s had two gaping holes in each of those places…for about 6 years.
Pretty attractive, huh? Well, she didn’t think so either and had a great idea to install a wine rack into the upper hole and get some sort of cover for the bottom hole. Mike offered to build something for her and came up with this.
For the bottom hole, we decided to use a grate cover. Mom wanted something black to extend the look of her ovens. We found this black grate at Home Depot and simply painted the area behind it black to blend in.
For the wine rack, Mike started by tracing half of a wine bottle onto a board {5 holes per board}.
Then he clamped them down to cut out the holes.
And used his jigsaw to make the cuts.
He made four boards total, two for each rack.
Then he sanded the tops using the Dremel for a nice, smooth finish.
Mom bought stain to match her cabinets so we stained those next {sorry, forgot to take pics}. Then Mike used his kreg jig to drill pocket holes to attach the racks to the cabinet so the holes would not be visible from the front.
Then he installed them. We started with the bottom rack by holding the board in place and making sure it was level.
Once the bottom row was level and screwed into the wall, we did the same process with the top rack. It’s a good idea to put some wine bottles on the bottom rack first to make sure you have enough space in between to get your bottles in and out easily.
And that’s it! To fill both the top shelf with the wine rack, and the bottom shelf with the grate, it cost about $30.
We’re still considering facing the inside walls of the cabinet with some sort of stained bead board to match the look of the rest of her cabinets, but for now the holes are filled and I think she’s very happy with the end result:)
