iPhone Case Makeover

My birthday was Friday and Mike surprised me with an awesome gift-an iPhone! I’ve been wanting one for a long time and we haven’t been willing to spend the moola on one, but apparently Mike was feeling very giving and my birthday was just the occasion to splurge:) In fact, we not only got one for me, but Mike got one too! His birthday is at the of October so we just went ahead and splurged for him too. Bonus-now I don’t have to come up with a gift for him:) This is sooo outside our spending comfort zone but we have thoroughly enjoyed every minute since having them and Mike hasn’t even fallen over with a heart attack since letting go of all that cash. Ok, I’m not just writing today to ramble on about how much we love our iPhones. I actually have a crafty idea to share today. We bought a bundle package with our phones that included a case, chargers, screen protectors, blah blah blah. They only had 3 color options for the case that we wanted {an Otterbox}: blue, black, or purple. I ended up taking the purple case but wasn’t overly thrilled about it {and Otterbox doesn’t offer many other colors even online} so I decided to revamp it once we got home.
Here was my plain purple case before:
I started by grabbing some gray acrylic paint I had laying around.
Here is the case after one coat {still wet, of course}:
I gave it a couple coats and then started thinking about what else I wanted to add. A couple ideas came to mind: paint a design? add stripes or a chevron print with fabric? cover the whole thing in fabric? paint a monogram? make a fabric monogram? and on and on and on. I originally painted on a small monogram but I thought it was too plain {sorry-I forgot to take a pic of the finished monogram}:
and decided to paint the monogram on some fabric instead. I grabbed out some scrap checkerboard fabric and cut out a octagonal shape by tracing the bottom of a little mug:
Then I painted on my monogram.
Kind of resembles a flower petal shape. Then I Mod Podged it to the phone:
I also Mod Podged all over my gray painted area to keep the paint from chipping off. So far, so good!
Nothing fancy, but it’s original and I won’t get it confused with all those other purple and white iPhones walking around out there:)
*Tip: spray paint may work better {less paint lines} if you have some on-hand!
