Guest Bath Shelf

After revamping the vanity, adding our new reclaimed wood mirror frame, some added hardware (which I still need to tell you about), it was time for some new wall prettiness in our half bath. I wanted some sort of shelving unit to house toilet paper, lotion, and, of course, some knick knacks. I originally thought I would enlist Mike to make me an shelf, but instead I wandered over to Goodwill and found the perfect piece {not that you aren’t capable, babe;)}.
Well, perfect for a makeover. {All this was done during a gorgeous day at the cabin-painting outside with my pup, birds tweeting, and lots of sunshine was wonderful}. So, first step was to give it a new coat of paint. I mixed the gray we used here, here, and here with a little white and went to work. I didn’t prime it so it took about 3 coats of paint to get it covered.
I knew I wanted an aged look to go with the rest of our bath decor. I started sanding the paint off about 30 minutes after I finished painting, this way it comes off really easily.
Next, I started on the backing. I grabbed some scrap fabric from other projects around the house and laid it out.
I rearranged until I liked the look.
The last step was to cut and staple the fabric into place.
We brought it home and I knick-knacked it up. I added toilet paper, hand lotion, candles, a mason jar with mints, a cut little pourer/jar/thingy, and some little lambs that my favorite New Zealanders sent me:)
Cost breakdown: $12 for the shelf, $2 for the jar thingy, $1 for the mason jar {everything else I already had on hand}. Total=$15 and well worth it! There are still a few finishing touches I want to add in there and then I will give you the full reveal!

The shelf looked nice as it was, but after the paint job looked fab, and stapling fabric to the back just took it to a whole new level! It looks fantastic, I shall definitelybe ‘borrowing’ the idea of using fabric as a backing.
Thanks for sharing.
I love the fabric–especially the toile. Very nice! (Visiting from The Shabby Chic Cottage.)
